What to Bring to Campus

WHAT TO BRING AND WHAT TO LEAVE AT HOME

This list contains suggestions about what you may need at Cottey. The rooms and closets are most likely smaller than what you have at home, so plan accordingly! If you have a roommate, you might want to coordinate who is bringing what. It may be more convenient to purchase some items after you arrive in Nevada.

PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION

All students are allowed to have cars on campus if the cars are registered. Parking, registration, and your car sticker are free. If you live on campus you will not need a car to get to and from classes; however, many students like the convenience of having a car or bicycle. Cottey is one mile from the town square and three miles from the Walmart. Limited in-town taxi service is available. Cottey provides free shuttles to Walmart every weekend for students.

COMPUTER ACCESS

A technology fee paid every semester provides academic IT support, access to computer
suites, print stations, computer labs, and wireless internet. With the ability to remain
connected wirelessly across campus, most students find it beneficial and convenient to use
their own personal computer.

Cottey’s computer-to-student ratio is one to four. All of Cottey’s computers are networked and offer full Internet access and email accounts for every student. There are two computer labs, and each residence hall has a computer suite.

Wireless printers, Chromecast, wireless hotspots, or any other device broadcasting a wireless network can cause interference with other students connecting and are not allowed while on campus.

You receive your official Cottey email address when you register for classes. Your Cottey email may be checked on- or off- campus.

WEATHER AND CLOTHING

Southwest Missouri will be hot and humid when you arrive on campus in early August. Temperatures will reach well into the 90s (32-37 Celsius). All residence halls and academic classrooms are air-conditioned. You still may want to bring, or purchase in Nevada, an electric fan to create a breeze in your room.

The chart below lists the average high and low temperatures in Fahrenheit and Celsius each month.

August

Average High: 90 (32)

Average Low: 66 (19)

October

Average High: 71 (22)

Average Low: 46 (8)

December

Average High: 45 (7)

Average Low: 24 (-4)

February

Summer-weight clothes are worn through much of October and again in the spring. Winters are usually moderate but some snow does fall, so bring a warm coat. Casual clothes are appropriate most of the time. However, certain special events and Sunday brunches necessitate dressier clothes. Students usually wear formal dress during the Hanging of the Greens dinner in December. A white outfit is needed for Commencement in May.
